| im not too sure on your local laws but assuming they are somewhat similar to some extent there are a few ways to look at it... were you two legally married or just together? (it could make a difference in the outcome) if you were married, you kind of shit out of luck because its all shared property no matter who puts the money into it... if you two were just together dating then it becomes a different ball game, yes both names are on title but if you have receipts with your name on specific parts etc then you can claim ownership to certain things if you really wanted to nit pick everything however it is an uphill battle...
think of the car as a business and you two as partners in the business, not necessarily equal partners, if you can prove you were the majority owner (say 70% to 30%) then 70% (example) is yours however proof is everything as opposed to just word of mouth especially if he is going to disagree. even still him just pulling the motor without your permission is like selling off a piece of your company without your approval. you want whats rightfully yours in your business therefore you can fight for your property whether it be in small claims or any other court, but remember lawyers = money you have to see how far you want to go and how much money you will waste for lawyers, of course you can always represent yourself in everything and save a boatload of money but just do research on what can and can't be done. your local penal code is a place to start. personally out of principal i would put up a fight myself and hopefully force him to get fed up with lawyer fees and everything to screw him over money wise and hopefully in the end engine wise
